When environment specific files are built?

Please confirm if this is true:

The environment specific files are built at one of two times:

1)      When you run “Tools” / “Preprocess BizTalk Bindings” from Visual Studio
2)      Or when you select "Tools"/“Build Server Deploy MSI”

Is the only two times?  Or, instead of 2) above, are the actually built when you run the .msi on a target machine?

I got from your doc the idea that the Admin updates the SettingsGenerator.xml file which means it needs to read it and parse it out at install time, correct?
Where I've worked, the developers always build the SettingsGenerator.xml file, even for the QA/PROD environments.

The environment specific XML files are generated from SettingsFileGenerator.xml:

  1. Every time you deploy from your solution in Visual Studio
  2. When you run Tools\Deployment Framework for BizTalk\Export Environment Settings from your solution in Visual Studio
  3. When you run the deploy wizard from the Start menu on a server

The MSI does not do anything with the settings XML files.  It normally contains and installs SettingsFileGenerator.xml.

To include it in the MSI, your .btdfproj file should contain in its <CustomRedist> target (taken right from the sample's .btdfproj):

    <Copy SourceFiles="EnvironmentSettings\SettingsFileGenerator.xml" DestinationFolder="$(RedistDir)\Deployment\EnvironmentSettings" />
